Program Overview:

Physics is the natural science that studies matter, its motion and behaviour through space and time, and the related entities of energy and force. Physics is one of the fascinating and the most fundamental scientific disciplines, and its main goal is to understand how the universe behaves.
The objectives of the MSc physics programs offered in the department of natural and applied sciences are as follows:

  • rovide the student with a broad spectrum of Physics Courses.
  • Emphasize the role of Physics in life and other applied discipline (Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Life Sciences and their applied areas).
  • Develop the ability of the students to conduct, observe, analyze and report an experiment.
  • Develop the ability of the students to deal with physical models and formulas mathematically.
  • Provide the student with different practical, intellectual and transferable skills.
  • Strengthen the student knowledge of Physics and its role in medicine.
  • Provide the student with mathematical and computational tools and models to be used in solving professional problems.
  • Improve the student’s skills (professional, communication, transferable skills).

Programme Educational Objectives:

  • To train undergraduate students with quality of education having theoretical and experimental knowledge of physics to enrich towards higher learning.
  • To prepare the highly moral and ethical professional graduates through educational visit, interaction with renowned personals through guest lectures, seminar, workshop and conferences.
  • To develop scientific temperament amongst students.

Program Outcomes (POs):

The program outcomes include to develop:

  • An ability to understand and solving the basic and advance problems through the various domains of physics.
  • An ability to identify and analyze the problem related to allied fields with help of analytical, statistical and computational techniques.
  • An ability to design and conduct experiments, analyze & interpret their data.
  • An ability to develop strong research-based knowledge and methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data to conduct research related to fundamental and application aspects.
  • An ability to use the tools and techniques necessary for science experimental practices. 
  • An ability to understand the recent challenges for clean and sustainable development.
  • An ability to work in multi-disciplinary streams of science.
  • An ability to communicate effectively through reports, presentations & discussions.
  • An ability to apply for higher studies in scientific and academic institutions, and civil services examinations etc.

  • Graduates in M.Sc. Physics can easily avail of technical jobs, both in the private and public sector. Some of the common job profiles for a physics enthusiast are college lecturer, assistant professor, online tutor,observation scientist, laboratory technician, or research analyst, assistant scientist etc.
  • They can apply for jobs in aerospace and defence, automobile, railways, nuclear and renewable energy, oil and gas, electronics and telecommunications and the manufacturing sector.
  • Firstly, as physicists, one can be involved in research and development in specialized branches such as elementary particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics, biotechnology, biophysics, chemical physics, radio physics etc.
  • One can pursue M.Tech degree in a variety of engineering or technology disciplines such as aeronautical, automobile, instrumentation, electronics and communication, or computer sciences. But, make sure you crack the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam first, before going down this road. Do you wish to have a long career in the field of research? Then, it is advisable to pursue your M.Phil or Ph.D. in Physics, after completing M.Sc. Physics and join any science research center.
  • Next, if you have a passion for teaching, you could also apply in government or private colleges and universities; polytechnic institutes, degree colleges, engineering colleges, IITs, IISc etc. The minimum requirement is M.Sc. Physics and UGC-CSIR NET exam for lectureship and JRF.  Moving on, an M.Sc. Physics followed by a B.Ed. can also land you a job in higher secondary schools. And then, there is the option of physics tutor, at the convenience of one's homes.
  • Some of the prominent national organizations, that one can try aim for, include Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), BARC, SSPL, Space Application Centres, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research Centre, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and National Atmospheric Research Laboratory of Department of Space.
  • Noted research institutes in India such as Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata and Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi also recruit M.Sc. Physics graduates, for technical jobs. 
  • One can also look out for the national laboratories and institutes like National Geographical Research Institute, Regional Research Laboratories, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Sources etc. These are some of the leading names to be associated with the field of science.
  • Moving further, you can try your luck in public sector banking, as well. Why? Because many banks recruit M.Sc. Physics graduates to the post of Probationary Officers.
  • Lastly, how about foreign countries? Physics graduates have ample of opportunities, be it, in healthcare, manufacturing and electronics companies in most foreign countries.
  • Those with exceptional academic excellence, can go a step further and apply in National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
