Program Overview:

The department offers M.Sc. Chemistry, two years post graduate programs. The masters program has been designed with the aim of fulfilling the demands for trained human resource to give thrust areas to ever increasing chemical industry and related fields. Successful students become professionally skilled and capable of being absorbed in academics, chemical industry and research institutions. A postgraduate degree in M.Sc. in Chemistry opens avenues of jobs both in public & private sectors. They can work as Analytical Chemist, Production Chemist, Research & Development Manager, Biomedical Chemist, Industrial Research Scientist, Materials Technologist, Quality Controller and Production Officer in Pharmaceutical Companies. The degree holders can get jobs in Petrochemical Industry, Plastic Manufacturing Units, Chemical Manufacturers, Food Processing Firms, Textile Industries, Patent Law Firms, Space Exploration Agencies, Ceramics Industry and Paper Industry.


Programme Educational Objectives:

  • Enhanced laboratory skills, develop the capability of being absorbed in, chemical industries and research institutions. 
  • Enhanced employability to work as analytical chemist, production chemist, Research& Development Manager, Biomedical Chemist and Pharmaceutical Companies. 
  • Lifelong learning leads to opportunities related to pursue higher studies and become eligible for various competitive examinations like, UPSE, NET, GATE etc. 
  • Provide value-based learning with concern for nature and society.

Program Outcomes (POs):

The program outcomes include to develop:

  • Demonstrate basic and advanced knowledge in the field of analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. 
  • Inculcate scientific knowledge about advanced writing, documentational, designing and computational, mathematical skills along with enhanced communication skills. 
  • Analyze and apply specialized knowledge of Chemistry in problems related to industry and society. 
  • Develop presentation skills and confidence required to work individually and in a team. 
  • Explain the principle and working of various instruments like Spectrophotometers (UV-Visible/IR), HPLC, TLC, Polarimeter, Refractometer for analysis and characterization of synthesized materials. 
  • Develop ethical values by way of dissertation, presentation, industrial visits and training programmes with lifelong learning.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs):

  • Acquire knowledge related to analysis of matter, properties, synthesis, characterization, and separation using analytical and instrumentation techniques. 
  • Develop research-oriented skills through laboratory learning, project work, workshops along with statistical and computational skills for identification, formulation and solution of problems. 
  • Develop and organize the importance of various elements, molecules and compounds with their structure, properties and reactions. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of major concepts, related to Industrial Chemistry with attention about the physical properties of matter, aspects of atomic structure, significance of electro-chemistry, heat and energy transformation, kinetics & equilibrium, green chemistry, nano technology, natural products, pharmaceutical chemistry and quality management systems.

M.Sc course allows candidates to get specialized in diverse areas of Chemistry (Agricultural Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc). They can also seek jobs in their selected area of study. Both public as well as private sector firms recruit candidates for their varied operations. Those who are interested to work out side India, can work with better compensation packages. As application of chemistry is needed in almost all industrial firms, one can find various job openings in corporate sector. Chemist is one of the common job profiles for these graduates. The main responsibility of these professionals is to find out the chemical composition of a substance, its chemical characteristics, its behavior in chemical reactions, and so on. Those who are interested in teaching profession can build up a strong career in educational sector.
