B.Sc. Biotechnology (Hons)

We are a large Department, spanning all the major biological research areas. All our courses are taught by specialists in their subject areas and build on our internationally respected research. We offer outstanding, state-of-the-art facilities; including computer labs, software-based analyses, sequence alignments etc. Our faculties are valued for both their scientific training and their transferable skills to provide best carrier opportunities. Most of our graduates will find work in areas directly related to their studies, including Industries, Food Sector, Pharmaceutics, Scientific officers in conservation and biological management, civil service management and other areas.

We develop highly trained and skilled professionals to meet the growing demand for trained manpower for the commercial linkage between Laboratories to Land. The major areas of study under the Department are Plant and Animal Biotechnology, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Molecular Phylogeny, Gene tagging, Recombinant DNA Technology and Gene manipulations, Hybridoma Technology etc. The faculty members of the Department are actively engaged in the following areas of research: Cellular and Molecular Immunology, cancer research, RAPD, AFLP, SSR and ISSR marker systems, Plant and animal proteomics, Plant Tissue culture and animal tissue culture, 16S and 18S ribosomal cataloguing etc. The department emphasizes on the studies supplemented with high quality laboratory work to maintain the National and International decorum of the study area. It offers and opens good carrier-oriented opportunities to the students.

Q. What is Biotechnology?

A. Biotechnology, in true sense, means the controlled and deliberate manipulation of biological systems, whether living cells or cell components, for the efficient manufacture or processing of useful products for the wellbeing of man in particular and other living organism at large. This newly gained knowledge through multidisciplinary approach has given birth to the new discipline of applied science called Biotechnology.

Q. Why to study Biotechnology?

A. By studying the components of living cells, we can learn how to control, fix and modify them to our benefit. This knowledge has already lead to the creation and manufacture of products that help in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases (e.g. the production of antibiotics, insulin, and other genetically engineered medicines such as safer recombinant vaccines). Biotechnology is also playing a role in providing services in the areas like healthcare, food, agriculture, energy and the environment.

Q. What are the career prospects in Biotechnology?

A. Biotechnology assimilates in itself a number of disciplines. There is a great demand for biotechnologists in countless diversified industries and sectors such as,

  • Career opportunities for students in biotechnology are plentiful. There are ample opportunities in industries producing healthcare products, textile industry, cosmetics and organizations engaged in different types of industrial research and development.

    Q. Is Glocal University affiliated to any University for purpose of recognition of degrees?

    A. Glocal University is a University established under sec 3 of UGC Act 1956. Being a University, the question of affiliation to another university does not arise. Since the university is recognized by UGC and Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, the courses offered by Glocal University are recognized.

    Q. How are UG Programs designed?

    A. Choice Based credit system with continuous evaluation is followed in semester pattern.

    Q. At the time of counseling, is the presence of candidate compulsory?

    A. Yes, the candidate along with his parent or guardian shall be present at the counseling desk.

    Q. Eligibilty & criteria:

    A. for UG programmes : To apply it is mandatory to have taken Biology as a subject in your XII std. 60% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry & Biology is a necessary eligibility.
    for PG programmes : Graduation in any discipline of science including Mathematics, Engineering or Medicine. Background in Biology is preferred for Biotechnology & Microbiology programs whereas a background in Mathematics or Computer Science is preferred for the bioinformatics program.

    Q. Placement

    A. Placement offered after M.Sc. Most students prefer to procure M.Sc after their UG. Therefore, not much placement after B.Sc

    B.Sc. Microbiology (Hons)

    Microbiology is considered to be the mother of research in all biological sciences including biochemistry, genetics, evolution, biotechnology, herbal formulations etc. Microorganisms are determinants of human health and the source of critical material for medical and industrial use. Genetic engineering and manipulations too, rely on microbial technologies and microbial genes for carrying out modifications that improve crops, breeds of livestock, and synthetic feedstock. In agriculture and food technology, the role of microbes is also very important.
    This department is well equipped with molecular biology equipment, like PCR Thermal Cycler, Electrophoresis and Gel documentation System and a good collection of microbial organisms. The department has well-qualified, experienced and talented faculty specializing in various fields of microbiology including fermentation technology, agro-microbiology, food and dairy microbiology, medical microbiology, environmental microbiology and molecular microbiology.

    A. Microbiology is a specialized branch of Biology that deals with microorganisms and their effect on other living organisms. The health of humans and existence of life on Earth depend on microorganisms, making microbiology a relevant and pragmatic science.

    A. Microbiology offers challenges to human intellect to find out the cause of deadly diseases in plants and animals at large and in humans in particular. At the same time, it also provides clues for finding out the remedy for diseases in the form of medicines. Microbiology plays an important role in developing many useful products for man and cleaning the environment.

They also identify harmful microorganisms in water, food, dairy, pharmaceutical and environmental products.

    In addition to these laboratory and technical jobs, there are several other career paths one can take with Bachelor,s degree in microbiology. Combining microbiology with another discipline, such as education, business, or journalism, provides an even wider range of career options. Such career options would include teaching in high school, scientific sales, science writing for the general public, public relations, or regulatory affairs. Completing a Bachelors degree in microbiology also provides the necessary foundation to continue an education in the medical, veterinary, dental or legal fields.

    An advanced degree in microbiology will broaden your career choices even further. A doctoral degree (or its equivalent) is almost always required for higher level positions in microbiology and other sciences. With a Ph.D. in Microbiology, you could be qualified to perform independent research, teach undergraduate and graduate students, or assume executive level responsibilities in government and industry.

    B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology

    This department deals with teaching and high quality training in diagnostics and medical analysis techniques. The emergence of the threat of biological weapons and also the emergence of new infectious diseases and modifications in the receptors of microbes like viruses, prions, bacteria, fungi etc., are challenging clinical experts to develop more robust diagnostic techniques. There is a dire need for capable experts, such as medical lab technicians and medical microbiologists, to contribute to the scientific diagnosis and management of diseases.
    In our endeavour to create a pool of highly trained professionals in this domain, we have established state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that include biochemical, electrolyte and hematological analyzers, ELISA readers, spectrophotometer & digital colorimeters, electrophoresis units, binocular & projection microscopes, microtome and automatic tissue processors, enzyme and hormonal assaying analyzers etc. The innovative use of molecular tools and automated software-based facilities are the key features of the programme.
    Our expertise extends to the fields of haematology, immunology, clinical pathology, biochemical and molecular diagnosis, histopathology & cytology, blood banking technology, genetic error analysis, molecular pathology, biochemistry & microbiology, serology etc. The department has highly qualified and experienced medical and paramedical faculty members. Career opportunities include viable prospects in various diagnostic laboratories, hospitals, health institutions of repute.

    Q. What does certification mean and is it necessary to work in a clinical lab?

    A. Certification assures competency so you can work in a variety of lab settings. When you pass certification exams, you can use the initials of your certification after your name. Most laboratories require certified personnel to do moderate and high complexity testing. Institutions are increasingly requiring the successful completion of the certification exam part of a new employee probation requirement.

    Q. Where do students get clinical experience?

    A. Clinical experience is obtained in hospital laboratories, independent free standing laboratories and physician based offices.

    Q. What is the employment outlook for Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs)?

    A. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that “employment of medical laboratory technologists and technicians is projected to grow 16 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. An increase in the aging population is expected to lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type 2 diabetes, through laboratory procedures.”

    Q. Can I further continue my education after completing this program?

    A. Students can further continue their education, as the MLT associate degree program prepares students to transfer into a Medical Laboratory Science bachelor’s degree program.

    Q. What is a Medical Laboratory Technician?

    A. Medical Laboratory Technicians perform routine clinical laboratory testing using analytical instruments to provide scientific data needed in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of disease.

    Q. How many students do you admit to your program each year?

    A. We generally admit 60 students each fall based on a point system in graduation and 25 seats in Post Graduation.

    The School of Life and Allied Health Sciences was started in May 2014 with the aim of producing highly trained professionals in various branches of the Biological Sciences. The main objective of the School is to provide academic training and research in the interdisciplinary areas of life sciences with a focus on extending the awareness generated from these studies to the growth of technologies. Presently, the School is offering higher studies with emphasis on a multi-disciplinary approach in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Lab Technology, Medical Microbiology, Agriculture and Forestry. The school is also offering PhD programme in various disciplines of Life Sciences. The School offers career-oriented courses with the aim of providing both proper orientation and research aptitude in the growing advanced areas of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
